OF PAECE, LIFE, AND DEATH... - an evening of contemporary music by the Hungarian National Male Choir

2025. April 13. 18:00
Budapest, Pesti Vigadó

With the participation of: Danubia Orchestra

The Hungarian National Male Choir is preparing a special concert on Easter Sunday, the opening day of Easter, to explore the mysteries of peace, life and death.

The first half of the concert will feature sacred music by prominent 20th-century composers Ambrož Čopi, Francis Poulenc and Arvo Pärt: after a glorious Marian hymn, the lively prayers of St Francis of Assisi will invoke holy simplicity and love of life, praying for peace and mercy.
This will be followed by two special pieces of Anglo-Saxon war music: while Samuel Barber's composition is essentially about the front, Britten's classical ballad is about betrayal, love and destiny, and can thus be interpreted in a war context.

The second half of the concert will feature compositions by two Erkel Prize-winning contemporary Hungarian composers, Ilona Dobszay-Meskó and Márton Levente Horváth, performed by the Danubia Orchestra.
The composers have in common that their compositions were written especially for the Hungarian National Male Choir in 2022 in memory of our great poets Sándor Petőfi and János Pilinszky.
The evening will feature the premiere of Ilona Dobszay-Meskó's Straight Labyrinth, a work based on a poem by János Pilinszky, which captures the poet's inner tension and metaphysical depth, showing the straight path of the labyrinth, which balances on the border between fate and transcendence.
The other special feature of the concert is Ilona Dobszay-Meskó's large-arched oratorio Missa "Da Pacem" , or “Peace Mass", the first time that the male choir movements of which are performed with orchestral accompaniment.
The mission of the Hungarian National Male Choir is to promote contemporary music and to present contemporary Hungarian music written especially for us to the public. And in a noisy world, the Choir feels a fundamental duty to stand up for artistic and human values.
